The first “smart” pedestrian crossings appeared on the roads of Novosibirsk in the name of the governor

The Ministry of Digital Development and Communications of the region, together with the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Novosibirsk region, began to implement a project to install “smart” pedestrian crossings » in the city of Novosibirsk. The project is being implemented on behalf of Governor Andrei Travnikov within the framework of the state program “Construction and development of the Safe City hardware and software complex in the Novosibirsk region” and is aimed at reducing road accidents.

The first smart complexes appeared in the Oktyabrsky and Kalininsky districts of the regional center. The smart complex consists of a video detector, an LED spotlight, a “Pedestrian” information panel and a spotlight for road marking.

A “smart” crosswalk is intelligent because it operates automatically when a person approaches the roadway. Thanks to artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies, the system recognizes a pedestrian, a special light display with the inscription “Pedestrian” turns on, the backlight and horizontal projection of the markings turn on. This allows the driver to quickly notice a person on the road, reduce speed and stop. This is especially important at night. Such complexes constitute a positive global practice. Their installation is especially relevant in small neighborhoods where it is inappropriate to install traffic lights,” said Anton Loshakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Communications of the Novosibirsk region.

For law enforcement agencies, specialists of the regional Ministry of Transport and the city hall, the Ministry of Digital Development provides round-the-clock access to the personal account of the system for monitoring the road situation and pedestrian safety. Recordings from CCTV cameras can be used as part of operational investigative work.

“Based on an analysis of accident rates, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Development, it was decided to install “smart” pedestrian crossings in the most dangerous areas. There is a video recording of the flow of cars; if there is a violation, we can track it.

Here, road safety plays an important role in conditions of poor visibility – snow, rain, when the surface is wet, glare from headlights. And in this case, the markings will still be there, even in bad weather conditions, ”noted Oleg Glukhenky, acting head of the road supervision department of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Novosibirsk region.

As part of the pilot project, three “smart” complexes were installed. In the future, their number on the roads of the regional center will increase.

Creating a safe and comfortable environment is one of the areas of development of “smart cities” and is carried out within the framework of the national projects “Housing and urban environment” and “Digital economy”.
