Discovering the town of Pourrain

Located at the gates of Puisaye, between Auxerre and Toucy, the town of Pourrain is a land of ocher with quarries which were exploited there from the 18th to the middle of the 20th century. Today it is a town which offers real comfort of life to its inhabitants.

Food, restaurants, health professionals and even schools, leisure centers (Les petits ocriers), accommodation… the commune of Pourrain has been able to preserve and create economic activities on its territory.

Numerous associations also energize the life of the commune, whether sporting, such as “Les Sentiers de l’ochre” and “La Jeune Garde de Pourrain”, cultural and artistic, such as the “Poussière d’ochre” association. Associations which, throughout the year, organize numerous events such as “The great Easter garage sale”, “Le festibière”, the Téléthon, hikes, concerts and aperitif concerts or even theme evenings .

The Saint Baudel chapel dates from the first half of the 16th century. It was probably built to accommodate mass during the construction of the choir of the neighboring Saint-Serge-et-Saint-Bach church. Sold during the Revolution, it served as a catechism room, barn, shooting gallery, etc. Following its recent restoration by the town hall, it has become a cultural venue hosting exhibitions and concerts. Small in size, it houses a magnificent paneled and painted ceiling.

“Le Domaine de l’ocrerie” formerly owned by the France Gall family, is today a guesthouse and art house. It is on this property that workers once extracted Puisaye ocher.
