Nine years ago, George Miller created a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival with his reboot of the famous “Mad Max”. A furious “Fury Road” which left its mark, where the lone wolf teamed up with Furiosa, played by the charismatic Charlize Theron. Back on the Croisette, the Australian filmmaker this time unveils a section around the past of this powerful woman. A “Mad Max” without Mad Max, therefore, which re-borrows the codes of the franchise for a highly spectacular result with dizzying staging… A roller coaster attraction lasting more than two hours, exhilarating… even if the surprise effect is not is no longer there.
Strong point: the “lore”, the universe… This world of desert and sandy desolation where corpses are superimposed. However, there is a little paradise, an Eden source of covetousness to which it seems impossible, once gone, to find the way back. It is in this context that this new intrigue begins which, at times, tends to fall back into the mystical trips that the project manager is fond of. The scenario, however, is limited to a war for power and a quest for revenge. The heroine does everything possible to find the gang leader Dementus, guilty of having murdered her mother before her eyes.
Excess
A reference to “Once Upon a Time in the West” for a blockbuster that borrows from both the western and the peplum. With the exception of the explanatory finale, the confrontation between the mysterious Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, who, while relaxed, enjoys playing a sort of Thor who has gone to the dark side, keeps its promises. Endless chases, explosions galore, motorcycles flying around, excessive stunts… George Miller pulls out all the stops. Each action scene is excessive, including in the unfolding, since some easily exceed a quarter of an hour. Difficult, therefore, for fans of the genre to be choosy…
